Action camera chest harness
First-person footage, hands free, from the angle that puts the viewer in your shoes
Strap it on, clip your camera in and ride, hike, run or paddle with both hands on the action. A Y-shaped elastic harness goes over your shoulders and buckles across the chest, a flat plate sits at sternum height, and a J-hook with a thumbscrew holds your camera facing forward.
Chest mounted is the angle people underrate. It sits lower and steadier than a helmet, it leaves your hands free, and it puts your own arms, handlebars, poles or paddle into the bottom of the frame, which is what makes point-of-view footage read as yours.
How it goes together
Plate, J-hook, thumbscrew, camera
Four seconds, once you have done it once
The plate on the front of the harness has a channel molded into it. The J-hook's flat foot slides down into that channel and clicks. The top of the J-hook is a pair of upright prongs with a hole through them: your camera's own fold-out fingers drop between those prongs, the thumbscrew goes through all of it, and you pinch it tight by hand. No tools.
The thumbscrew lets you set any angle you like. Loosen, tilt, tighten, and give it a quick check before a long descent.
Compatibility
Fits the cameras you already own
This harness uses the standard action-camera finger joint: two prongs on the camera, three on the mount, one thumbscrew through the middle. Any camera that presents those two fold-out fingers clips straight in.
Cameras with built-in fold-out fingers
GoPro HERO 8, HERO 9, HERO 10, HERO 11, HERO 12, HERO 13 and MAX have the fingers built into the camera body, so they clip into the J-hook with nothing else needed. So does any other action camera built to the same pattern.
Older GoPro cameras
HERO 7 and earlier mount with the frame or housing that came with the camera, which carries the fingers. Put the frame on, clip it in, and film.
DJI, Insta360 and AKASO
DJI Osmo Action mounts through DJI's quick-release adapter from the camera's box. Insta360 Ace and most AKASO cameras come with a bracket or housing that provides the fingers. Insta360 X-series cameras mount through a thread-to-fingers adapter.
To check your own camera, look at its underside: two flat plastic tabs that swing down are the fingers, and they clip straight in.
Get the angle right
Mounting angle makes the footage
Mount the camera upside down for the best view
This sounds wrong and it is the single most useful trick on this page. A chest sits on a torso that pitches forward the moment you lean into speed or a descent, so a camera mounted the obvious way up ends up filming the ground a few feet ahead of you. Inverting the camera in the J-hook buys back that angle. GoPro's own support notes say the same thing about chest mounts. Switch your camera's orientation lock off first so it corrects the picture.
Wear it high
Sit the plate up near the sternum and the lens looks out at the view, not down at your front wheel.
Snug is steady
Pull both straps until the plate stays put when you push it with a finger. A snug harness is a steady shot.
Set the angle
Loosen the thumbscrew, tilt, re-tighten. Try inverted first if your footage keeps finding the floor.
Test ten seconds
Record a short clip, walk a few paces, play it back, and the ride is yours to film.

Built simple
Light, low-profile and quick to put on
- Plain elastic webbing, plastic sliders and a side-release buckle. It weighs next to nothing, goes on over a t-shirt or a jacket and clicks shut in a second.
- Narrow straps leave most of your back open to the air, so it stays comfortable on long rides and trail runs.
- Your camera's own stabilization does the smoothing, and a chest mount keeps the camera near your center of gravity, so the shot moves with your body rather than with every glance sideways. That is a real advantage over a helmet mount.
- Polyester webbing and plastic hardware handle getting wet. After rain, surf or salt spray, wipe the metal thumbscrew dry and it is ready for the next trip.
- Strap tension keeps it in place. Pull it snug and it stays where you put it.
Fit
One size, adjusted in four places
Where the adjustment is
Each shoulder strap runs through its own plastic slider, and the chest band has a slider on each side of the side-release buckle. Four points, all of them webbing pulled through a slider, so you can set it over a t-shirt and reset it over a jacket in a few seconds.
Buyers say it best: “Fits me and my wife easily. Adjustable and strong.”
